The New

*looks up* Oh. Hey. I have a blog that needs to be looked at…Well…hello there. If you’re watching this for the first time, I’d like to say hello. Here’s some vanilla chai tea and some ramen. Enjoy. It’s all I can really offer you right now.

Many writers face hardships, but that doesn’t make it any harder or easier than anyone else out there. That all plays into our ideas though. If we lived perfect lives, we would undoubtedly write stories without knowing hardships. That’s a very bad idea by the way. Perfect doesn’t make a good story. *coughcoughTwilightcoughcough* Yes. I am very against Twilight. I haven’t read much, but I have talked about the storyline with those who have. I have given it some hope, but from what I’ve heard and seen, Bella and Edward get out of troubles fairly easily. The fourth book in particular has potential to be such a great book with dynamic battles, but they main enemy just goes away after so much building up. It’s like the world’s biggest slap to the face. That’s part of the reason why people don’t like the story. It makes for a cute love story, but it doesn’t stick with that. It tries to be a fantasy book that just tries too hard, but it does one thing wonderfully. It introduces the new, which is exactly what people were looking for when the series started.

That’s what we need more of. We need more of the new in literature, and today, I’m here to show the world how to bring in the new in a few easy steps using the Lord of the Rings when needed.

1. Look at the old
Yes. The old is what starts the new. Simply look at the old, see what makes it work, and remove everything else. In the LotR series, you have two people trying to find their way to a destroy the one thing that can destroy the world while the rest of the main characters try to make their path as easy as possible or simply defend and ward off enemies. A very simple idea that works perfectly for what we need. It’s an old story, one that’s said to have created the basic ideas of all modern fantasy, but inside of it is so much more. Forget about the plot. The plot is useless for today’s lesson. Look at the inner workers of the story; the love, the betrayal, everything that makes people sometimes forget that the entire story is a mission to Mount Doom to destroy the ring of power. Look at even the politics in the story, and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. Lord of the Rings isn’t a good series because the main plot is wonderful. The main plot is useless without everything else in the story.

2. Think of an interesting story
Now that you’ve got an idea of how to make a compelling story, take what you know and work around it. Don’t just throw random events together and call it a story. Take your main character(s) and work them around the story. Make the events be the most important events of their life. Don’t stop and go into flashbacks of the main character(s)’ past all the time. Instead, work into their present and future and just imagine how it would be like if it had all of the best elements as LotR. Don’t rip off the series though. Don’t you dare think that I’m telling you to take the beautiful story of Lord of The Rings and make it into your own. The elements of LotR is found in many other stories such as Harry Potter and even Young Adult books like Looking For Alaska. What you’re trying to do at this point is work what you know that works into a new story while making sure that you’re not overstepping any boundaries.

3. Mix it all together
Take your new story and mix it in with the elements of LotR. Look at what’s new and what’s old. Now rewrite it. Do this step at least three times before even trying to sell your story as something new. You’re not ready for that yet anyway, because we have one final step.

4. Make your story stand out.
What’s a good story if it’s just like all of the other good stories out there? Don’t just make a story that looks good; make a story that stands out above the rest. Add new elements that haven’t been thought up yet. Make up new things just to blow people’s minds away. Let them enjoy the splendor of what you’ve created, then do it all over again. Make people look into what you have and show them that you know how to make things that aren’t just repeats of old stories.

And that is how you make something that is new. Simple, right? I’ve been doing just that with my current story. I can promise that there are going to be things that will blow you all away. Why don’t you try to do the same for me.
